Around Castletown

Once the capital of the Isle of Man, Castletown is a historic town, full of character, and offering a wide range of attractions to it’s visitors.

Castletown is named after Castle Rushen, the well preserved medieval castle which dominates the centre of town, and is certainly a worthwhile place to look around. The centre of town is a very pretty place to explore seeping with olde worlde chamrm. The small market place gives way to narrow streets, home to a number of fascinating independent shops. Making your way down to the harbour you will find fishing boats and quaint fishing cottages with stunning views out across the bay.

You can gain a more in depth insight into the town’s nautical and political past by visiting a number of excellent museums in the town;  the Old Grammar School, the Nautical Museum and the Old House of Keys

The Nautical Museum is a small tree-storey building where the 18th century armed yacht, ‘Peggy’, was found walled up in her boat cellar after lying there for almost 120 years. The museum is based on the nautical history of the Isle of Man and particularly the boat owner George Quayle, who lead such a life of mystery that no one dared to enter his boathouse till the last family member had died.

The Speaker invites you to have a real vote on key laws, which could have been major turning points for the Isle of Man.

Scarlett Visitor Centre

Scarlett Visitor Centre Isle of Man @ Roy Cottage Self catering holiday accommodation  Scarlett Visitor Centre is near the Scarlett Quarry – the source of the limestone which helped build Castletown. Follow the nature trail around this limestone habitat, past the Stack, a large mass of rock which was formed during volcanic activity, about 350 million years ago. You’re likely to see shags, cormorants, gulls, oystercatchers, ducks and herons, and watch out for the stonechats and meadow pipits that dart amongst the rocks in summer. On a clear day it is possible to see almost the entire mountain chain of the Island at the furthest point on the nature trail from the visitor centre.
